Abstract
To assess site of action of bronchodilatation with a beta adrenergic agonist, fenoterol,
and an anticholinergic bronchodilator, ipratropium bromide, we measured the density
dependence of maximal expiratory flow rate in 37 asthmatics.
There were no significant changes in ¥ÄVmax 50 with either agent. However, there
were significant inverse correlations between the prebronchodilator ¥ÄVmax 50 and the
change in ¥ÄVmax 50 after the administration of fenoterol or ipratropium.
These results suggest that sites of bronchodilatation in asthmatics are not different
between fenoterol and ipratropium, and those are related to the prebronchodilator site of
obstruction.
